Kedayan is in West Brunei-Muara District and Tutong District. Also spoken in

Malaysia (Sabah) (and Sarawak too – kaawai tanah).

Region: Brunei is in the capital, Brunei-Muara District, and the coastal strip. Kedayan is in West Brunei-Muara District and Tutong District. Also spoken in Malaysia (Sabah).

Alternate names: Brunei-Kadaian, Orang Bukit.

Dialects: Brunei Malay, Kedayan (Kadaian, Kadayan, Kadian, Kadien, Kadyan, Karayan, Kedyan, Kedien. Kerayan).

Kampong Ayer. Brunei, Kadayan, and Kampong Ayer have 94% to 95% lexical similarity with each other, 80% to 82% lexical similarity with Standard Malay.

Classification:Austronesian, Malayo-Polynesian, Malayic, Malayan, Local Malay.

Language use: The de facto national language. Vigorous. Brunei is used by those in Bandar Seri Begawan and surroundings, and by young people and educated older people from different language or dialect backgrounds. All ages. Speakers also use Malay.

Comments: Brunei and Kadayan are both recognized by the government as indigenous groups.

'Orang Bukit' is the name of the people.

Kadayan: agriculturalists; Kampong Ayer: fishermen and craftsmen in Water Village. Muslim.

Also spoken in:

Malaysia (Sabah) and Sarawak (Kaawai Tanah).

Language name: Brunei.

Population: 54,000 in Malaysia. Population includes 46,500 in Sabah, 7,500 in Sarawak.

Region: Upper Balait and Tutau rivers, northern coast, 4th and 5th divisions, Sarawak; Sabah in Beaufort, Kuala Penyu, Labuan, Labuk-Sugut, Papar, Sipitang, Sandakan, and Tenom districts.

Alternate names: Brunei-Kadaian, Orang Bukit.

Dialects :Brunei, Kadaian (Kadayan, Kadian, Kadien, Kadyan, Karayan, Kedyan, Kedayan, Kedien, Kerayan).

Language use: Speakers also use Malay.

Comments: Dialect variations are regional, not ethnic. Agriculturalists (Kedayan); fishermen (Brunei).
