Earlier this month, President of Indian Restaurant Operator Association of Malaysia (Persatuan Pengusaha Restoran India Malaysia), Datuk Ramalinggam Pillay quoted as saying that there will be no more “roti canai” starting from next (the following) week – Daily Express pp.1 09 January 2008, Bahasa Melayu section.
Mamak Roti Canai
According to him, this is due to critical supply and the exorbitant increase of the price of flour. Suppliers charge RM5 – RM15 higher than the ceiling price of RM33.60 per 25kg imposed by government.
Minister of Domestic Trade & Consumer Affairs of Malaysia Datuk Shafie Apdal heed up for an appointment, Ramalingam gave a nod.
So, never mention draconian ISA. Never disgruntle on non-caring government. In Malaysia, even mamak roti canai has the privilage to bargain with a federal minister. No one is being sidelined in government decision making process. Everyone participates. All ideas are taken into account and even mamak roti canai ideas are important.
Thank God, roti canai is not my staple food. So I don't really care about the increase in roti canai price. Like most Kadayans, I eat rice as the daily source of carbohydrate.
But, the then flour shortage happened at the same time when cooking oil was also experience a sudden shortage. Speaking of cooking oil, its an embarrassment for us to experience shortage in domestic supplies when Malaysia is actually the top palm oil producer in the world.
Back to the roti canai, I think Shafie aware that he is kinda busy as federal minister to entertain just the roti canai maker. Where is the solution priority, what is the raison d'ĂȘtre of the meeting, I still wonder.
Pardon me, but I learned about management too. When you face the shortage, the solution priority is to put the supply back to normal. When the cooking oil became a problem, cooking oil is the center of the solution. Similarly, when flour supplies is the problem, the solution must be around the flour supply area, not on roti canai. As far as the roti canai is concern, I won't give a damn if I am a minister.
But government does, so there must be a reason for that. That is, general election is coming.
