He is generous indeed. He donated RM44 million to an NGO, what a good soul. But as he is a politician I couldn't help but to wonder, where on earth he could gathered that much money from? Because if you donate some money, you are not going to donate everything that you have!
KANGAR (themalaysianinsider), June 26 ─ Former Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim yesterday told the state assembly that he had donated RM44 million to the Perlis Islamic Foundation (PIF) for its projects.
The Tambun Tulang state assemblyman said he had endowed all his shares in Teknologi Tenaga Perlis Consortium Sdn Bhd (TTPC) for the past 10 years.
Debating the motion of thanks for the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail's, address when opening the state assembly sitting, Shahidan said he was forced to bring up the donation issue as it had been misinterpreted.
He said the donation was supposed to have been more than RM85 million, but after deducting the loan for the investment in an independent energy provider, the nett amount donated was RM44 million.
Speaking to Bernama after the sitting, Shahidan said the main objective for his endowment was to enable PIF to continue the construction of its building in Pengkalan Asam, which had been abandoned for the past 15 years.
"I can give the money to the Perlis State Economic Development Corporation, but since I was the PIF chairman in 1995, I decided to donate my shares to PIF," he said.
Shahidan said he had to come out with the statement as there were certain quarters who questioned the money given to PIF.
When asked whether he had felt a sense of loss for donating so much, the former menteri besar said he had never felt that way as he had been a donor even before he held a state government post.
